Post 11 Overcomes 12 Walks to Win
The hosts were offering but the visitors weren't accepting.
One night after TJ Hinson opened the season with a route-going effort that included one walk, three Wayne County pitchers served up 12 free passes as the team struggled past Area I East newcomer Edgecombe County 6-3 Wednesday night at Mount Olive College to improve its record to 2-0. Wayne's next game has not been determined and will be posted as soon as something is known.
Despite the high number of walks, coach Brad Reaves was not that displeased with the results from two of his inexperienced hurlers. "(Starter) Sterling Grice hadn't been on the mound in two weeks," Reaves pointed out. "Taylor Allen was nervous with this being his first time." Edgecombe was unable to take advantage of the walks because it had only two hits.
The offense managed seven hits against a trio of Edgecombe pitchers, and Reaves again emphasized that the hitters had also had a long layoff entering the season.
Wayne looked as if it would have things its way offensively when it scored three in the first. Tyler Edwards drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second as Walker Gourley's grounder was booted. Jackson Massey slapped a 2-1 fastball into the left centerfield gap for a triple and scoreed on a John Wooten grounder.
Edgecomble, which had an 18-16 edge in baserunners, scored in the third on two walks and a one-out hit by Patrick Goodwyn. Patrick Ruffin walked to load the bases with two out but a strikeout ended the threat.
In the Wayne fourth, Chad Gurley, walked with one out, stole second and scored on an Alex Casey single to right for a 4-1 lead. Drew Fairman drove in a run in the Edgecombe sixth, but Drew Davis was caught in a rundown off third on a grounder to waste another threat.
Wayne got some breathing room in the eighth by scoring twice. Massey led off the inning with his second hit, a double to right. John Wooten was hit by a pitch and Tyler Ham walked to load the bases. Nolan Lancaster singled up the middle to give Post 11 a three-run cushion.
Edgecomble got the tying run to the plate in the ninth on consecutive walks to Goodwyn and DJ Davis. Patrick Ruffin grounded to second for a forceout at the bag, but the relay throw to first allowed Goodwin to score. John Wooten, the third Wayne pitcher, ended the game with a striekout.

Wayne Opens 2007 Season with Win
Make note of this because you may not see it again. Wayne County American Legion coach Brad Reaves had a pitcher complete a nine-inning game.
But when you have someone cruising along the way TJ Hinson was, why mess with a good thing?
Hinson became only the second Post 11 pitcher since 2003 to go the distance in a regulation game as Wayne opened the 2007 season with a 3-1 win over Garner Tuesday night at Mount Olive College. Wayne will play at home tonight against Tarboro. In other Area One East action, Pitt County 39 defeated Wilson 15-4 in seven innings in a game called due to the ten-run rule.
Wayne was shorthanded with the absence of eight Charles B. Aycock players due to the Golden Falcons' playing for the state 3-A title this weekend. So Hinson's performance helped take the pressure off the offense.
The right-hander allowed five hits, walked one and struck out six in a game that lasted less than two hours.
"That was a good ballgame," said Reaves, "and whoever made the mistake was going to lose.
That turning point came in the eighth with the score tied at one. Walker Gourley, who picked up six assists at shortstop, got things going with single up the middle. Jackson Massey bunted him to third. John Wooten got a free pass, but Wilson reliever Taylor Ryan hit Tyler Ham to load the bases.
Nolan Lancaster hit the first pitch to center for a sacrifice fly, and Wooten came home while Ham was caught in a rundown between first and second.
Hinson retired the first two batter in the ninth but then ran into a bit of trouble. Jeffrey Hall singled to left, and Zack Bingham reached on a catcher's interference. Hinson rebounded to strike out the next batter to end the game.
Wilson took the lead in the sixth on a leadoff single by Brian Sears and a two-triple by Corey Carver. Wayne tied it in the home half. Gourley singled with two out and continued to third on a fieldin error. Massey singled through the right side of the infield to bring in Gourley.
Reaves was especially pleased with his defense. "If you make the routine playes, you'll win. That's what we did tonight."
"We really competed tonight. The guys came out hungry. Some of them hadn't competed in a couple of weeks."

Post 11 Baseball: All the Team Records
Several years ago, I spent a couple of months at the Wayne County Library going through the Goldsboro New-Argus microfilm to get as much as I could in the way of scores and statistics. Well, I didn't get as much as I could, as there are limits to how much a person is willing to do in these matters. But I have stats and scores for each team, though the quality of the former varies. But here to my knowledge are the records of all the Post 11 teams from the beginning.
1945: 4-6 (Carlton Frederick of Frederick's Music played on this team.)
1946: 5-2
1947: 9-7
At this point, the program disbanded despite assurances that it would return. I couldn't find anything in the paper to explain what happened other than probably a lack of interest.
1960: 6-6
1961: 6-5
1962: 12-10
1963: 27-11 (State runner-up.)
1964: 24-11 (State runner-up.)
George Whitfield coached these two teams. Players include Wayne Sullivan, Rooster Narron, and Jimmy Bryan. Oh yes, some guy named Doyle Whitfield. Perhaps you've heard of him.
1965: 12-12
1966: 4-12
1967: 7-10
1968: 3-11
Whitfield remained with the program through 1965. The quality of play quickly deteriorated until the program again ceased to exist after the 1968 season.
1978: 5-12
1979: 7-13
1980: 13-9
1981: 7-14
1982: 4-15
1983: 15-9
1984: 28-9 (Area I champion)
1985: 19-13
1986: 8-16
1987: 13-8 (Allen Battle led the '86 and '87 teams in RBI and runs.)
1988: 17-11
1989: 9-11 (The last losing record.)
George Whitfield returned to coach Post 11 for the next three seasons.
1990: 16-14
1991: 21-6
1992: 24-5
Doyle Whitfield took over in 1993.
1993: 17-10
1994: 23-14 (Won league playoffs.)
1995: 15-14
1996: 30-10 (Won Area I.)
1997: 35-11 (Second in state.)
1998: 23-6
1999: 27-8
2000: 33-8: (Won league title, went to first state tournament held in NC.)
2001: 24-11
2002: 38-8 (Second in state; most wins ever by a Post 11 team.)
Whitfield retired and was replaced by Brad Reaves.
2003: 18-5
2004: 28-9
2005: 17-10
2006: 12-12
The all-time record is 665-404.
Comments are appreciated. I'll do something such as this from time to time.
