I'll also to finish the stats by this afternoon. Ask me for an attachment if you can't get to the stats online.
It was quick and painless. Well, maybe not painless.
Wayne County Post 11 made quick work of Area I East opponent Ahoskie Post 102 Saturday afternoon at Scarborough Field, winning both ends of a seven-inning double header by the ten-run rule. Wayne (4-2, 10-2)will resume South Division play Monday night at home against Pitt County Post 160.
Taylor Bullard retired the first 13 batters before giving up a walk and a hit in the fifth as Wayne took the opener 12-0. Garrett Davis homered in his first two plate appearances to lead the way offensively. Post 11 piled up 14 hits in four innings.
Wayne continued to get it done at the plate in the second game as it rolled to 11-1 win. Walker Gourley had three hits and drove in four runs. Tyler Ham added three hits and two RBI as part of an 11-hit attack.
Bullard's performance came against one of the weakest teams in the league, but it was still totally unexpected given his numbers heading into the game. In his 5 2/3 innings this season, the right-hander had allowed 11 hits, walked seven and thrown 149 pitches. but this game his control was exceptional, as he needed only 55 pitches in his five innings. Only a leadoff fly ball and the two-out hit by Josh Morris left the infield.
In the Wayne first, Davis followed a triple by Jackson Massey by sending a 3-2 fastball over the right field fence. Wayne added two more runs on RBI hits by Zack Wright and alex Casey.
Davis hit a solo home run in the second, and that was enough for Ahoskie. He drew intentional walks his next two trips to the plate.
Wayne broke it open with seven runs in the third. John Wooten and Zack Wright had consecutive two-run hits.
There was no suspense in the second game concerning a no-hitter as Ahoskie had a respectable six hits. but the story was the same as the first game: too much Post 11 offense.
Wayne's big inning was the six-run second. Jay Rose got things going with a leadoff double to left and scored on Ham's single up the middle. The other key hit in the inning weas Gourley's two-run single.
Gourley drove in two runs in the third with a double over the head of the left fielder. The final two runs in the third came off hits by Nolan Lancaster and Ham.

Well, they're finally up! Notice the link on the right? You can read about/discuss AL baseball there under "Preps." It's based in the western part of the state, though Area I has a pinned page. I post occasionally. I haven't forgotten our third baseman's request about OBP.

Wayne Rebounds To win at Snow Hill
Your humble correspondent sort of overslept, so I promise to post a box and the updated stats tonight.
With Brandon Price at the top of his game, Wayne County Post 11 cruised past Snow Hill Post 94 6-1 Wednesday night at Greene Central High School to set up an important Area I East South Division showdown Friday on the road with New Bern.
Wayne (4-2, 8-2) shook off the effects of Sunday's 12-9 loss to Pitt County 39 while Snow Hill finds itself fighting just to make the postseason playoffs.
Price, making his second start of the season, displayed his usual skill of not overpowering the opposition but rather keeping the batters off balance by effectively mixing his fastball, changeup and breaking pitches. He struck out just three but allowed a mere five hits and two walks in going the distance on 108 pitches. The Post 11 defense also backed him up with two double plays.
The only blot on his ledger came in the first when when leadoff batter Justin Bagley's popup fell untouched in the infield for an error. Two outs later, Taylor Sutton drove him home with a single to center.
The Post 11 defense would tighten up after that, and Price (2-0) would close the game with a flourish by retiring the final 10 batters.
Wayne finally broke through against Snow Hill starter Drew Sowers in the fifth. Thomas Pilkington got things going with a bad hop double up th e middle. tyler Ham moved him to third with an opposite-field double to left. Chad Gurley tied it on a grounder, and Walker Gourley put Wayne ahead for good with a two-out hit to center.
Gurley continued his best offensive game of the season with a run-scoring double in the sixth over the head of the right fielder to score Jay Rose.
Garrett Davis' leadoff single in the eighth finished Sowers, and Wayne took advantage reliever Matt Kennedy's control problems by drawing three walks, including one by Gurley with the bases loaded.
Alex Casey followed with a suicide squeeze, and he reached base when the ball was bobbled by the pitcher. Gourley's RBI grounder made it 6-1.

Wayne Loses First Place at Pitt 39
This is the best I can do for you tonight. I had to do two stories. It's almost 2:30. I'll post the box and the stats before the Snow Hill game. I have to transcribe the last two games into my scorebook. any typos are, well, mine.
Wayne County Post 11 coach Brad Reaves was singing his team's praises following a come-from-behind win against Wilson Friday night. But he was in an altogether different mood the next game.
Wayne came to Pitt Community College Sunday night on top of the Area I East South division standings, but left no longer in that position following a 12-9 defeat to Pitt County Post 39.
(The Wilson game scheduled for tonight at Mount Olive College has been cancelled due to lighting problems.)
Pitt starter Cameron Rollins struck out 10 in six innings and Pitt held off a late Post 11 surge to drop Wayne to 3-2 in the division and 7-2 overall.
Reaves castigated his players for their lackadaisical attitude before the game and their failure to adjust to the opposition pitcher. ""We didn't adjust to the situation,"said Reaves. "We forgot there was a right field here. They do let you hit the ball there."
While Wayne was having its problems offensively, Pitt broke a 1-1 tie with four in the fifth. Leadoff batter Cooper Gagnen reached after the pitcher and third baseman couldn't decide on who should field his bouncer to the left side of the infield. He went to second on a wild pitch, and was safe at third on a grounder to short when third baseman Thomas Pilkington lost the ball on the tag. Josh Hudson and Daniel boyd followed a walk with two-run hits.
Pitt's Clark Massey had a solo home run in the sixth.
Rollins ran out of gas in the sixth and left the game after a hit batter and two walks. reliever Chase Hardee recorded two outs before Pilkington cleared the bases with a double.
So Wayne was back in it, but only for a short while.
Jackson Masey, who started the seventh foe Post 11, hadn't gotten much work recently, and it showed. He walked four of the seven batters he faced, and by the time Pitt was done it had struck for six runs and a 12-4 lead. MIchael Spruill had the big hit with a two-run single.
Wayne, however, still had some life in it. Jay Rose had an RBI double and Pilkington a two-run single in the five-run eighth.
In the ninth, Wayne got the tying run to the plate but a strikeout ended the game.

My Accident
In case you're wondering, here is what happened. If you want the Reader's Digest version, it's simple: My world got turned upside down.
I was headed home, having gotten off a little early, and had left I40 for US 1, aka the Beltline. I live off the Jones Franklin exit. My speed was 55, which is mylimit because I'm getting ready to turn, and there wasn't anyone close to me in my lane. I must have looked at the radio or someting similar because when I glanced up again I was headed straight into a car. I managed to swerve just enough to avoid a straight-on collision, but the impact sent me across the other two lanes and into the median.
I was able to get out of my vehicle and walk across the road and ask the woman what happen, that I wasn't mad, but simply wanted to know how she stopped there. In the rush of the moment, I didn't realize the nature odf my enemies. she mentioned something about having her flashers on.
Eventually, the EMS people arrived and persuaded me to get into the vehicle so they could examine me. My main concern was that I had lost my car I had recently purchased and wouldn't be able to get anywhere. More important, people who rear-end others are always at fault.
I had to get to Wilson, I told them, so I asked to be let off near my house in order to find a way to the game. I was hoping I could drive my Tercell to Wilson. ( I also hope Duke will win the national championship in football.)
The police talked to me briefly, and one eventually told me that the other driver had been cited. I was off the hook. The woman's address is in Greenville. From what I gathered, she had missed her exit and was backing up instead of going down the road and turning aound.
So, we went to Wake Med on the other side of town. the EMS personnel had me on a stretcher and couldn't get a pulse For awhile. (Much to the dismay of some of my enemies at work, I didn't succumb to my injuries.) It is arounfd this time that the individual begins to notice his injuries.
Of course, one does not go in and out of the ER quickly. It was well into the evening before anyone gave me that much attention, which Iunderstand because my injuries were not life-threatening.
First, they fitted me with a boot similar to what basketball players weae. That is all they can do. The healing process has to take effect. Finally, they got around to the wrist. I received several shots os morphine. That was an experience.
Then the doctor injected this ten-foot long needle in me twice to numb the wrist area..I just about jumped odd the table and strangled him.
He placed my arm between his legs -Will I know what you're thinking - to realign the bones in the home that he could avoid surgery. I already had X-rays, but it was time for one more to make sure his effort had been successful. And it was.
My aunt and uncle took me home to get some things and feed the cat. Then it was off to Grantham.
The rest of the night was rough, both physically and emotionally, as the pain refused to subside. The doctor prescribed medication but I didn't know where to get it at that late hour.
Things are better today, but I have virtually no movement with my left hand. I don't know what I'll about scoring.
The woman's insurance company doesn't have anyone in the office for the weekend. The agent assigned to my case is gone until Wednesday. Rental car agencies won't give me a car becayse I don't have a credit card. I am going to try to get one MOnday from my bank.
I am hoping the woman will not fight the charges. Then allstate could expedite the matter.
I"ll be there for the next two games, but I don't know after that. Thanks for reading.

Wayne Survives in Wilson
Thanks to Rudy Coggins and Rob Craig for help on the story.
WILSON — Big innings, trash talking, late comebacks, hit batters and spectacular plays led to another fun night for American Legion archrivals Wayne County Post 11 and Wilson Post 13. And guess what? they get to go at it again Monday.
Wayne County had an early 5-0 lead evaporate when Wilson scored seven unanswered runs. But Post 11 didn’t flounder and responded with a five-run outburst which spearheaded a wild, 10-9 victory on the Fleming Stadium diamond Friday evening.
“This is Wilson-Wayne baseball,” said Wayne County coach Brad Reaves. “I mean hey, this is what you want. It was a good ball game.”
For Wayne County, Walker Gourley had a huge night going 4-for-5 with an RBI while John Wooten contributed three hits and RBI. Overall, Post 11 recorded another double-figure hit game with 16 .Those hot bats got Wayne County going at the start as they exploded for four first-inning runs to go ahead 4-0. Wooten, Jay Rose, Tyler Ham and Dave Overman all contributed RBIs.
The lead was 5-0 in the fourth inning when Wayne County starter Taylor Bullard got into serious trouble. The Harrells Christian product allowed the first five batters to reach in the inning. After giving way to Taylor Allen, Wilson kept getting runs home via walks and hit batters. Thomas Moore had the big hit — a two-run single which pushed Wilson ahead 7-5.
Despite being on the wrong end of a big inning, Wayne County fought back.In the top of the fifth, Post 11 got a run back to pull within one before things really got crazy.
With both benches taunting each other, tensions were high in the eighth inning. Wilson reliever R.B. Edmundson took the mound for his third inning of work and got into trouble when Nolan Lancaster and Overman both reached on hits.Following a sacrifice by Will Edgerton, Gourley drove home the tying run. Edmundson then drilled Jackson Massey with a pitch. Massey and Edmundson jawed at each other, but cooler heads prevailed.Wooten took advantage of the baserunners with a two-run single to give Wayne County the 9-7 lead.“John’s a good hitter and he’s clutch,” said Reaves. “He can have one bad at-bat and the very next one, shake it off and he’s ready to go.”Thomas Pilkington capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to put Wayne County up by three.
Wilson still had plenty of fight left and came right back in the bottom of the inning. Post 13 loaded the bases with no outs following a walk to Bradley Taylor. Reliever T.J. Hinson then induced a double-play ball from Brett Allen and it looked as if Wayne County might escape. Edmundson did his best to erase his performance on the mound the previous inning witth a two-run single to cut the lead to 10-9. Blake Jones lined into the gap. With Edmundson flying around the bases, Ham received a perfect throw and got ran over by Edmundson. After the dust settled, Ham jumped up with the ball and the umpire called Edmundson out.Edmundson immediately jumped into the face of the umpire and Ham. Both benches emptied, but order was restored quickly and without much incident. In the bottom of the ninth, Wilson again loaded the bases. Hinson saved the night as he struck Lamm out swinging and got Taylor to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Wayne County (7-1 overall) travels to Pitt County Post 39 today before an anticipated rematch versus Wilson in Mount Olive on Monday.“This is a good group right here,” said Reaves. “I told my coaches this is going to be a fun group. They’re going to be one of my favorites.

Wayne 10 Pitt 39 3
Note: For you night owls, I'll do the stats before I go to work.
Pitt County Post 39 and Wayne County Post 11 have won all but three of the past 16 Area I East titles, and only once during that time has the league championship series been without both programs. But the game at Mount Olive College Thursday night showcased two teams headed in opposite directions.
Wayne (3-1, 6-1)continued its climb up the South Division standings with a 10-3 win and sent Pitt home with a 2-4 mark. Four of the six teams in the division will make the postseason, so the Post 39 squad has its work cut out. The two teams will meet again on Sunday.
Wayne will travel to Wilson tonight. Post 11 coach Brad Reaves said he plans to give several of his pitchers opportunities to throw in the non-division contest.
Brandon Price, making his first start, had some trouble early but settled down to pitch six solid innings. He allowed three base runners after the second inning. "His curveball had some bit after the first inning," said Reaves. "It came in after the first."
The Wayne offense produced 11 hits. Walker Gourley led the way with three, while John Wooten had two hits and three RBI.
Price retired the first two batters of the game but ran into trouble with two walks and a run-scoring single by Andy Powers.
Wayne came back in home half to put two on the board. Will Edgerton singled, Gourley doubled and Jackson Massey drew the first of his four walks to load the bases. Consecutive ground outs resulted in the two runs.
Michael Spruill tied it in the second with a two-out hit.
In the Wayne third, Gourley singled to left and Massey walked. After a double steal, Wooten lined a fastball to center to score both runners.
Wayne scored two more in the sixth without getting a hit out of the infield. Nolan Lancaster and Thomas Pilkington walked to start the inning. Dave Overman laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first, but the second baseman couldn't catch it, leading to a run. Alex Casey's grounder led to the other score.
Tyler Ham and Overman had run-scoring hits in the eighth to make it 8-2.
The final two runs came in the ninth. Gourley beat out a grounder to short, and Massey again walked. A fly ball sent Gourley to third, where he scored when Ham's liner to right was dropped. Massey went to third and scored on a passed ball.

Wilson Destroys Post 160
http://www.wilsontimes.com/sports/Schools/289168479102899.php
After piling up 30 runs in its previous two games, Post 13 nearly matched that total with a 29-4 destruction of Pitt County Post 160 in Fleming Stadium. The game was called after seven innings. In winning its third straight to move to 9-4 in the Area One Eastern Division, Wilson of the North Conference pounded 24 hits, including six doubles and two grand slams against its non-conference foe."Yeah, I think our hitting's starting to come around," said designated hitter Bradley Taylor. "We were slow to begin with but, now, it's starting to heat up. It's a good time for it to heat up, too."Taylor's slam keyed an 11-run first inning for Post 13 against Post 160 starting right-hander Billy Walling (0-1). It was the first slam for Taylor in high school or American Legion ball and a proud moment for the recent Charles B. Aycock High School graduate.
"Especially over here at this place (Fleming)," said Taylor, whose shot hit about halfway up the light pole in left field. "You've got to hit one a long ways to get it out of here." ...
With pitching-rich rival Wayne County Post 11 next up Friday night at 7 in Fleming, Wilson hopes to keep its offensive fire lit."Oh, we're going to need plenty Friday night!" assured Taylor.

Wayne Surges Past New Bern
The beginning of Monday nights American Legion contest between New Bern Post 24 and Wayne County Post 11 at Mount Olive College was eerily similar to Wayne’s previous game six days earlier when visiting Snow Hill also struck for four runs in the first on its way to an 8-7 win.
But unlike in that game, the Wayne bats came to life a lot earlier, resulting in a 10-6 Area I East South Division victory. Wayne (2-1, 5-1) will travel to South Central High School Wednesday to face Pitt County Post 160.
Instead of rallying late and ending up just short of a comeback, the Post 11 offense got two of those runs back in the home half of the inning, and then went ahead for good with its own four-run inning in the second.
“One thing I was questioning this year was whether we were going to hit, so I was pleased with that,” said Reaves. Wayne had 15 hits, led by three apiece by Walker Gourley and Nolan Lancaster.
Wayne starter Sterling Grice was in trouble from the start as New Bern strung together four straight opening hits capped by a two-run double to left by Brett Williams. After a groundout, Sam Sanders drove in two more with a single to right. Grice appeared to be on his way to an early exit, but he settled down to get the last two batters.
Wayne took some of the pressure off Grice with two runs in the home half of the inning. Will Edgerton reached on an infield hit, and Gourly sent him to third with a single. Jackson Massey singled home a run, but Gourly was thrown out at the plate. Massey went to second on the play, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
Grice recovered from the poor start to hold New Bern scoreless over the next three innings while allowing two runners. He walked the first two batters in the fifth, but reliever TJ Hinson got out of the jam with the aid of a pickoff throw to third to end the inning.
“Sterling is going to give us quality innings,” said Reaves. “He’s still learning to pitch at this level. He’s going to have to hit his spots and keep it down.”
After Grice settled down, in his next trip to the mound, the Post 11 offense gave him the lead. Tyler Ham got it going with a leadoff single. Consecutive hits by Thomas Pilkington and Nolan Lancaster loaded the bases. Dave Overman was hit by a pitch to force a run home. One out later, Gourley drove a breaking pitch to left center to clear the bases.
Wayne added two more in the third. Jay Rose walked and advanced on a single to shallow left by Tyler Ham. Both moved up on the play due to a fielding error. Thomas Pilkington drove in a run with a hit up the middle, and Ham came home on an infield hit by Lancaster.
Garrett Davis drove in a run in the sixth, and Wayne was in position for a big inning in the seventh after loading the bases with none out. The inning fizzled on a double play as Wayne could score only once.
New Bern threatened in the eighth against Taylor Bullard by loading the bases with two walks and an infield error. Davis extinguished the threat with a strikeout and set New Bern down in order in the ninth.

Snow Hill Holds Off Wayne 8-7
Note: Statistics will be posted Wednesday evening.
It didn't take long for Snow Hill Post 94 to put Wayne County Post 11 in a big hole Tuesday night at Mount Olive College in a battle of unbeaten American Legion teams.
The visitors bolted to a big lead, then fought off a late surge by Wayne to win 8-7. It was Snow Hill's first Area I East South Division game while Wayne fell to 1-1 and 4-1 overall. Wayne will take the rest of the week off before playing host to New Bern Monday night.
Wayne coach Brad Reaves pointed out that it was the type of game in which Wayne hit the ball well but didn't get as much as might have been expected. "We hit 6-7 right at them," he said. "We can't hit it better. We just dug a hole."
TJ Hinson, who went the distance in the season opener against Garner, didn't have much success locating his pitches, and the Post 94 lineup made him pay for it with four first-inning runs. Snow Hill added four more in the fifth against Taylor Bullard with the help of three ground ball singles. The highlight of the inning for Wayne came when it turned a triple play.
Wayne got on the scoreboard against Snow Hill starter Drew Sowers in the fifth. Jackson Massey had a leadoff hit and went to third on a single by Garrett Davis. John Wooten's infield hit scored Massey, and the runners advanced on a passed ball. A big inning appeared in the making, but in the blink of an eye things turned against Wayne as Sowers grabbed Tyler Ham's liner and doubled the runner off third. A grounder ended the threat.
Wayne came back strong in the seventh despite the setback. Dave Overman doubled to left on the first pitch, and Sowers hit Alex Casey. That was it for the Snow Hill starter, Robert Tyndall replaced him.
Will Edgerton sent a 3-1 fastball into the left field corner for two runs. Walker Gourley reached on an infield hit while Edgerton took third on the bad throw to first. But bad luck again found Post 11 as Gourley was hit going to second on Massey's apparent hit to right.
Garrett Davis brought in Edgerton with a fly ball to right. John Wooten then brought the crowd to its feet by smashing a changeup well over the fence in left to cut the lead to two.
Brandon Price, meanwhile, was doing a stellar job in relief by holding Snow Hill scoreless the rest of the way and allowing Wayne to rally. He allowed two hits and two walks in five innings.
After stranding two in the eight, Wayne again threatened in the ninth. Gourley's leadoff walked spelled the end of Tyndall. Right fielder Jordan Corbett took his place and got a quick strikeout. Gourley advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a bad hop single to right by Davis.
Davis stole second as Wooten struck out on a 3-2 pitch to get in scoring position, but Corbett fanned pinch-hitter Zack Wright to end the game.
In the first, Justin Bayley led off the game with a single, and Tray Beaman doubled off an 0-2 pitch to put runners on second and third. Hunter Chase's grounder resulted in an error, allowing two runs to score. Will Rhem doubled home a run, and Lance Murray finished the scoring with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
Bud Robertson had the big hit in the fifth against with a two-run single up the middle on the ground. Tyler Chase added a run-scoring hit.
Snow Hill still had the bases loaded after Chase drove in a run. Mike Speed then hit a grounder to shortstop Gourley, who tagged second and fired to first for the second out. Murray tried to score on the play but was cut down at the play for the third out.

Wayne Opens League Play with Extra-Inning Win
Wayne County Post 11 coach Brad Reaves will take the win, but that doesn't mean he has to be happy about how it happened.
Pinch-runner Alex Casey scored from second during a rundown behind him, and Wayne struggled past Kinston Post 43 2-1 in 10 innings on the road to successfully open its Area I East South season and improve its record to 4-0.
"We didn't come to play," said an exasperated Reaves. " We forget stuff. We drag around the dugout. If we don't get two great pitching performances, we're dead."
Wayne emerged victorious despite not getting a hit after the fifth inning. And quite appropriately, the winning run came after a baserunning mistake that was erased by a failure of the defense to take advantage of it.
Kinston pitcher Billy Dudding retired the first two batters in the tenth, then walked Jay Rose on four pitches. He hit Tyler Ham on a 3-2 count. Reaves sent Casey to run for Rose.
Ham was picked off first by the catcher, and Casey raced for third. As Kinston desperately tried to get to Ham for the tag, Casey made a successful dash for the plate. Ham stayed alive as Kinston botched the rundown, but Dudding got the final out on a grounder.
Wayne now had regained the lead. And with flamethrower Garrett Davis on the mound and facing the bottom of the order, that looked to be enough for the visitors.
But nothing in this game came easy for Post 11. Davis threw a 1-2 breaking pitch to leadoff batter Antonio Whitfield, and he drilled it into left for his third hit. Whitfield moved to second on a bunt.
Davis sent another pinch-hitter back to the dugout on a three-pitch strikeout but walked Brad Jones to bring up the top of the order.
Then, horror of horrors, Davis dropped the ball while on the mound for a balk. That put two runners in scoring position, and Wayne was one hit from going home a loser.
Bryce Grady fell behind 1-2, fouled off two pitches and then seemed to go for a very high fastball that hit the umpire's mask. He was called out on appeal, and Wayne had survived its second straight extra-inning game.
Davis and Charles B. Aycock teammate Grant Sasser shared the mound duties. Sasser went the first five, allowing an unearnd run in the fourth. Davis retired the first 10 batters he faced until Whitfield's single in the tenth. The UNC signee struck out ten and walked one.
The other Post 11 run came in the second. Dave Overman reached on a two-out infield hit, went to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a Chad Gurley hit to left.

Wayne County Escapes From Garner With Extra-Inning Win
For the second straight year, Wayne County Post 11 made a way out of no way and left Garner High School with a win over Garner Post 232.
Brad Reaves' team ran its record to 3-0 by escaping two late-inning jams and exploding for eight runs in the eleventh for a deceptive 14-6 victory over its Area I West opponent.
Jackson Massey sparked his team to victory with five hits, including a home run, and got the win by performing a couple of escape acts that would have done Houdini proud.
Wayne outhit Garner 22-12 but scored just five of 22 runners in the first nine innings. That almost led to a heartbreaking defeat.
Massey, the fifth Post 11 hurler, struck out the first two batters in the ninth with the score tied at five but gave up a double and a walk. To make matters worse, he advanced the runners with a wild pitch. He battled Jeremy Hall to a full count before retiring him on a popup to the mound.
Wayne snapped the tie in the tenth. Massey reached on a bunt single down the third base line, stole second and came home when John Wooten's hit to left was misplayed.
But trouble quickly found him in the home half of the inning. He got the first out on a liner to left, but pinch hitter Taylor Ryan singled up the middle, stole second and came in on a Hunter Smith double. Brian Clark doubled to shallow right, as Smith had to hold up at third because he had to make sure the ball fell in.
That left Massey facing pinch hitter Brad Buske. Massey rose to the challenge by fanning him on three pitches. Next up was leadoff batter Landon Adams, already with three hits. The plan was to "unintentionally" walk Adams on four pitches. The count ran to 3-0, and Adams lunged at a pitch off the plate for a fly ball to center to send the game to the eleventh.
As for what happened, Reaves said, "I think he wanted to win the ballgame." Instead of that, Garner saw Wayne County light up reliever Darren Tew for eight runs.
Tew got the leadoff batter on a groundout and went ahead of Conner Narron 0-2 before hitting him on the next pitch. Jay Rose hit an opposite-field double into the left field corner. Will Edgerton was intentionally walked to get to Walker Gourley, who had struck out three times.
Gourley lined a hit to left to score one run, and Massey drilled a first-pitch curveball to center to put the visitors ahead by three. After a forceout, Wayne strung together four more hits, including a two-run double by Dave Overman and a two-run single by Narron.
Wayne took the lead in the first on a solo home run by Massey and added two in the fifth on RBI hits by Tyler Ham and Rose. Garner tied it in the home half as Hall and Brian Sears had consecutive RBI doubles.
Wayne regained the lead with two in the sixth, but Corey Carver's two-run homer to left in the seventh again knotted the scored.
In last year's game, Wayne took a one-run lead into the ninth only to have Garner put runners on the corners with none out. Wayne got the lead runner out on a grounder to third baseman Thomas Pilkington, then put the game away when Pilkington started a third-to-first twin killer on another grounder.
